about

Thomas Wiggins, known as Blind Tom or sometimes Thomas Bethune, which was the name of his owner when he was a slave in Georgia. He was born in Columbus, Georgia in 1849 and died in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1908. To my knowledge there is only one recording of his music commercially available. It is played by John Davis on the Newport Classical label. Impressionistic pieces, such as an imitation pf a sewing machine, a rainstorm, and the Civil War battle of Manassas are truly astonishing, My song came about as a result of travelling around New Jersey, where I found myself thinking of him.
