My first musical memories came from listening to the radio that my mother always had on when I was a child. Some of my favourites were the popular operatic singers of that time, such as Maria Callas, Enrico Caruso, and Mario Lanza. Lanza singing Ave Maria always got my attention, as did Dean Martin singing Volare. I liked the classic Neopolitan melodies too. Some rock & roll fans objected when Elvis cut It's Now or Never. It is one of my favourite Presley tracks. To me, Maria Callas is hardcore - a blues singer almost. Her singing Casta Diva from Bellini's Norma is a piece I return to often, as I do with Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain.
