Listening to Johnny Cash growing up was the chief reason I became a singer and writer. Kathryn Lay (later to become Kathryn Clarke!) for Night Ride to Birmingham based on my memories of the event, as I recounted it to her. The trip was in 1969. I did buy a Gibson guitar after that, an Everly Brothers model acoustic, which I still have. I also learned to sing Big River - my favourite Cash number. In fact, I followed every song and every road his music suggested, until his passing in 2003. I was fortunate to meet him and June Carter in London in 1994. He was a gracious and humble man. I travel with his music and he inspired me still.
